From one unbroken spiral to a soft, sculptural shell — a relaxing pattern anyone can draw.
Starting from a single unbroken spiral, this organic pattern gradually takes on the form of a sea shell or a snail — and which one you see is entirely up to you.
Despite how impressive the finished shell looks, it is much easier to draw than it appears. All you need is a pen, a pencil, and a piece of paper.
What you’ll learn
- How to draw a smooth, unbroken spiral as your foundation
- How to add radiating lines that give the shell its ribbed texture
- How to add soft graphite shading for depth, volume, and a beautiful sense of light and shadow
Step 1 — The spiral
Begin with a single unbroken spiral. Start from the center and let it grow outward in one calm, continuous motion. Don’t rush — a slightly imperfect spiral is exactly what gives this pattern its organic charm.
Step 2 — Shape the shell
Let the outer curve of the spiral open up and round out, so the whole form starts to read as a shell. The small tight coil stays at the center — that’s the heart of the pattern.
Step 3 — Radiating lines
Once the spiral is in place, add lines radiating outward along its curve. These lines do not need to be perfectly even or straight — slight irregularities give the pattern an organic warmth that makes it feel alive rather than mechanical. In fact, the less you try to control them, the more natural and beautiful the result becomes.

Step 4 — Thicken and define
Go back over your radiating lines and thicken some of them, letting the ribs alternate between bold and fine. This is where the shell starts to feel graphic and confident.
Step 5 — Soft shading
The final step is where this pattern truly comes into its own. A soft layer of graphite, gently blended, transforms it completely — adding depth, volume, and a beautiful sense of light and shadow. Without shading, the shell is clean and graphic. With shading, it becomes something else entirely — dimensional, tactile, almost sculptural.

A little tip before you start
Draw the spiral slowly and let your hand relax. This pattern rewards calm, unhurried lines — and every shell you draw will be a little different, which is exactly the point.
Draw along, enjoy the process, and see where your spiral takes you.
